TEETHING PROBLEMS IN OZ BY BEN LERWILL “My wife and I were a little nervous about taking our baby son, then aged 10 months, to Australia for four weeks, but we really needn’t have worried. The flights were far from being the nightmare we feared – a two- day break in Hong Kong helped recharge the batteries – and Australia itself is superbly geared up for young families. The weather, the water and the whole pace of life all lend themselves well to unrushed exploration. In hindsight it was a mistake to hire a campervan and head out to Hunter Valley for a few days – the evenings weren’t overly relaxing! – but we did have hugely enjoyable trips to the Blue Mountains and Jervis Bay. Having an unpredictable baby meant every day was a mini-adventure in itself, and the whole Aussie experience gave us some very special memories.”
year it’s the Lions rugby tour, so we’re expecting an extra 20,000 visitors for that alone. At the moment, almost all our marketing is aimed at the 50-69 age group, the people who have the propensity to travel long haul and have a bit more disposable income – we’re committed to motivating them to go to travel agents and visit Australia.” Rodney Harrex, General Manager UK & Northern Europe, Tourism Australia
