DETECTION
enables an instructor to plan a scenario that involves single or multiple releases of hazardous materials, and also off ers the potential to defi ne a series of release characteristics, such as duration, direction, persistence and deposition, from a variety of substances. The instructor setting the training exercise can even defi ne the environmental conditions that would aff ect the movement and/or state of the virtual plume during the timespan of the scenario.
Multiple scenarios The use of such powerful yet easy-to-use training tools that can be set up very quickly promises to change the face of CBRN response training. These tools off er the ability to design multiple scenario options including the type of threat, the point of release or delivery mechanism from single or multiple sources, and a full range of constant or changing environmental conditions. As a result, they can meet the challenges faced by today’s CBRN response instructors, who must provide the best possible training for an increasing number and variety of potential threats. Flexibility is further enhanced by the fact that once confi gured, all exercises can be saved for future use and revision. These can be run in either a classroom environment for table top exercises,

with trainees using standard gamepad controllers to manipulate their positions on-screen – with actual simulators responding according to the simulated threat, or as a fi eld-based training system. In fi eld training mode,
PlumeSIM™ works with several types of high fi delity simulation instruments and GPS-enabled Players to allow the instructor to monitor the movement and actions of students and to make real-time adjustments to training scenario.
RECCEX 12 These simulation tools and soſt ware are now regular features of response exercises designed not only as training but also as knowledge-sharing events to promote best practice. They were showcased at the major Nordic CBRN Reconnaissance Exercise RECCEX
12, hosted by the Swedish Armed Forces in Umea in August, which enabled the participants to experience the new simulation equipment fi rst-hand. At least 50 Argon simulators were used for the exercise, which took place from 22-23 August. PlumeSIM enabled instructors to trigger readings and alarms on the detector simu-
lation instruments carried by personnel out in the fi eld. The PlumeSIM control unit was located within a disused hangar,
