SOLUTIONS: FRIENDS ARENA, SOLNA
contractor, PEAB. They selected LBI – and PEAB went with that choice. “A number of factors
resulted in our selection,” says James Hurst. “LBI has a track record of providing similar systems in large arenas, having delivered a much larger although functionally comparable system at Wembley Stadium some five years ago. Secondly we presented a compact and efficient design, which offered clear benefits to the end user.” PEAB retained Liddle as
project leader: he was given the responsibility of ensuring that the winning bidder fulfilled the specified criteria, and also co-ordinating between the various services.
DETAILED DESIGN LBI then set about creating the detailed design, using computer simulations to select speaker types and locations. Once the power requirements for loudspeaker circuits had been determined, amplifiers could be selected. Equipment rack locations were then decided; this enabled cable lengths to be measured and cable types to be selected, bearing in mind the permissible electrical losses of 0.5dB maximum. Routing and audio processing requirements were defined and the quantity
and functions of user interfaces were identified. Electro-Voice speakers were chosen for a number of reasons, says Hurst: “EV XLD281 loudspeakers sound excellent and have a remarkably small form factor considering their efficiency and power handling.” Their frequency response meant that separate LF enclosures were not needed, simplifying structural loading requirements and reducing visual impact. Additionally, “support from
David Howe at Bosch Prosound UK was key to our decision to offer a solution with Bosch as a supply partner,” says Hurst. “We were impressed with the GUIs designed by David for the London Olympic stadiums and the IRIS-Net platform. These were functionally similar to the Friends Arena spec therefore it made sense to us and the client to go with this working solution.” The control GUIs needed to be intuitive to use and flexible enough for all the types of event held at the arena. “Following the approach pioneered with the Klotz system at the old Wembley Stadium, we use the architectural drawings for each building level to provide a simple topographical layout. This makes the operator’s job

as stress free as possible,” he explains. “Working with David Howe, we were able to roll out a fantastic GUI for the Friends Arena.”
These GUIs are on 24in Dell monitors (1920 x 1200) attached to paging control unit computers – one in the Event Control Room and one in the Security Control Room. At the new Wembley Stadium, it was found that when operators were offered the use of a touchscreen and a mouse, most of them used the mouse – so it was decided not to provide touchscreens at Friends Arena.
DANTE NETWORKING The complete audio installation runs on a gigabit single-mode fibre-optic redundant Dante network. Hurst explains: “At the initial
design stage, CobraNet was the established protocol but Dante was an emergent technology offering native gigabit support, higher channel count, lower latency and automatic configuration, enabling us to offer flexible routing and future-proof expansion capabilities. The provision of the Dante protocol allows us to transport audio around the arena between any equipment fitted with compatible devices. These include Lake LM26 units which we use as ‘digital stageboxes’ and two Yamaha LS9-16 consoles. Visiting tours as well as the in-house equipment can seamlessly communicate digital audio between numerous strategically placed fibre optic ‘media panels’.” Nine compact system racks are equipped with a total of
