Spend on education technology is increasing globally, with demand for tablet devices driving growth, writes Steve Montgomery
THE FUTURESOURCE Consulting annual Strategic Landscape for Digital Content in Educationreport tracks 11 different types of device to deliver a comprehensive view of the global education sector. “The total spend in the global education technology market increased by 23% to $11.6 billion from 2011 to 2012. This is a strong result compared to other markets and considering the pressure on education budgets across the world,” says Colin Messenger, senior analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “The value of mobile

ON THE MOVE This increase in spend in education technology has been primarily driven by the uplift in the mobile PC market, which at $6.8 billion now accounts for 59% of the total spend, up from 51% the previous year. The explosion of tablets and ‘one-to-one learning programs’ primarily driven by the iPad and now iPad mini, has dominated in the past 12 months. “This is especially true in US districts where the

few affordable competing alternatives available to challenge their position. More recently, the
landscape has begun to shift rapidly, with interactive whiteboard solutions coming under increasing pressure from new display products and suppliers. This pressure is further compounded by governments and educators increasingly searching for open source software platforms; key vendors have tended to avoid this model,
valuing the ability to lock in end users to proprietary platforms to ensure strict licence controls. The interactive whiteboard market dropped 3% in value in 2012 although volume remained the same. Unlike all previous years, though, there were few interactive whiteboard advancements as vendors increasingly focus on developments in the ecosystem including software, content, assessment and other
services as opposed to hardware. Interactive flatpanels had
a four-fold increase in annual volume last year and there was a proliferation of new models and new vendors into the market. Nearly all interactive whiteboards vendors now have a range of panels to meet the emerging trend of updating interactive whiteboards with touchscreens.
