Ethel

Robert Kennedy’s widow gives an intimate insight into America’s most famous political family

January Episodes: 1

In this fascinating HBO documentary, Emmy®-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy (Ghosts of Abu Ghraib) explores the history of her legendary family from the perspective of her 84-year-old mother Ethel.

In her first extended interview for more than 20 years, Ethel traces her courtship with the young Robert Kennedy and how she embraced political life without losing her mischievous streak (at her numerous parties, members of President John F Kennedy’s cabinet often ended up in the swimming pool involuntarily).

Along with several of her children, she also recalls more testing times, as the family suffered a string

of tragedies. In 1963, her brother-in-law JFK was assassinated, prompting, in her own words, “a tidal wave of grief” and “six months of, just, blackness”. Only five years later, her senator husband Robert suffered the same devastating fate. Kennedy’s documentary covers many of the 1960s’ defining moments, including the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War protests, with her own family playing a substantial role in one of the country’s most turbulent decades.

Featuring rare home movies and revealing interviews, Ethel is a unique and moving insider’s account of a renowned American dynasty.
