Greggs: More than Meats the Pie
Go beyond the counter of the high street’s favourite bakery
Most of us have one round the corner, a trove of baked delights, be it a pasty, steak bake or maybe just a nice iced bun, not forgetting that old winter warmer the sausage roll and the couldn’t-be-more-appropriately-named yum yum. Greggs has become one of the country’s most beloved bakeries and now it’s the subject of Sky 1 HD’s latest documentary series.
Not bad considering the high street favourite’s humble beginnings. With pushbike in tow, founder John Gregg started delivering eggs and yeast to families in Newcastle upon Tyne back in the 1930s, before opening his first

store on Gosforth High Street in 1951. Building a reputation for providing great quality and value, the brand has risen very nicely since then, and now boasts nearly 1,600 shops.
Greggs: More Than Meats the Pie is a taste of life at the bakers – crusts and all – and looks at the ingredients that go into making it such an enduring success. The eight-part series will follow the company for almost a year, getting to know key members of its 20,000 staff, and taking viewers from the store front to the boardroom and top-secret tasting labs.
