Friday Night Lights

Clear eyes, full hearts… with FNL, drama fans can’t lose

Friday Night Lights was for too long a TV underdog left to wallow in the late-night schedules, until February 2012 when Sky Atlantic HD began playing its first three seasons back to back. Receiving the recognition it so richly deserves, viewers quickly fell for the charms of the US football drama, eloquently described by Entertainment Weekly as a “rare gem of a series that could lift your spirits and give you the ugliest ugly cries that you’ve ever experienced”. Cheering the show on until the end, Sky Atlantic HD kicks off its final two runs.

Changes abound at the start of season four as Coach Taylor (the impeccable Kyle Chandler) steps down from training the Panthers to take on the not-so-impressive East Dillon Lions. Wife Tami (the equally impeccable Connie Britton), meanwhile, stays put and deals with some interesting school politics. Without spoiling what’s to come, the farewell lap features the return of some much-missed faces and, finishing on a high, scored Friday Night Lights overdue awards, with Chandler and writer Jason Katims both picking up statuettes at the 2011 Emmys.

Blue Bloods

Keep up with the family and the force as the hit New York cop drama continues

Tom Selleck is Frank Reagan, the New York City Police Commissioner and head of the Reagan family. His straight-talking father Henry (Len Cariou) is a former police chief; eldest son Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) is an NYPD detective; daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan) is an assistant DA; while youngest son Jamie (Will Estes) is a young cop still finding his feet in law enforcement.

As the season continues, Danny must work with the CIA to track down an NYPD detective being held hostage by a Malaysian drug lord. And when Henry goes on a ride-along with Jamie, he shows him a different approach to getting the job done. Later episodes see a famous photographer who is a key witness in one of Erin’s cases targeted in a hit-and-run incident, prompting the assistant DA to enlist the family’s help to protect him. Plus, Danny enters the world of voodoo when a knife-wielding attacker dressed as the Spirit of Death strikes on Halloween.
