fromone tech to another

Christmas is coming

Lisa Dunlop asks, are you ready for the festive rush?

With Christmas just around the corner we need to be sure that as techs, mobile therapists salon or Spa owners we are preparing and are totally ready for Christmas and themadness that goes with it.

Don’t take the risk of waiting until the final hour to order your products and get your Christmas gift packs ready. It is a well known fact that people start purchasing their gifts a couple of months before the big day. For those clients who are salaried, majority will only have one pay day left until Christmas. You should make it easier for your clients and have some nice gifts available with all different price ranges, from stocking fillers right through to deluxe gifts.

Buy some nice baskets and put some nice little products in, and have gifts targeted just for men. Also think about stocking fillers; they need to be targeted at all ages from the young through to more mature women. If you really don’t know where to start or don’t have the time, there are plenty of suppliers that have ready made gift packs that you can purchase.

Your female clients will spend while they are with you, they are already feeling harassed about what’s still left to be done; you having these little items will make their life so much easier ; you’ll see the £££s rolling in to your tills and not the shops down the road!

These gift packs also give you the scope for a whole host of new clients - put your

business card in every gift pack, maybe even a small voucher to be used through the month of January.

taking stock

I would also like to recommend that you have a look at your diary and try to work out what stock you need over the next few weeks and pre order, there is nothing worse than leaving it to the last minute. What if you run out of something or what if the weather is bad again and your delivery can’t get to you?

You would think that when the weather is bad that nails and beauty treatments are the last of someone’s priorities. But, from my experience, my clients have always been more worried about getting their nails and other treatments done, so don’t hold up on the Christmas orders, start planning now and get it all delivered early.

Remember also that this is not just your busiest time of year, but also the busiest time for all nail techs, so leaving your Christmas stock orders late could lead to ‘out of stocks’ from your normal supplier, leaving you in a bit of a Christmas pickle.

a good offer?

Now is the time to start thinking about what offers you may or may not put on. Clients want to look glam, tanned and perfect and so most have budgeted for the cost of their nails and other treatments. Therefore putting on special offers is a potential waste to the amount of money that you could earn. I would save the special offers for the

end of January / beginning of February when you know that business can tend to be quiet. Why put offers on when your clients are ready and willing to spend their hard earned cash anyway?

Christmas is a time that we are exceptionally busy and I think it’s always a shame that we are so busy with our regulars that we don’t have time for new clients. It could be that this new client is just a one-off Christmas client but there is also the possibility that you may be turning away a lifelong customer so perhaps leave a couple of spaces in your diary for those last minute clients who suddenly decide that it would be nice to have their nails done.

Perhaps you are fortunate enough to know a tech that teaches the rest of the year and is free during the Christmas period. They could be looking to earn some extra cash over the busiest time in a salon’s diary. Offer for them to come in at a good rate so that you don’t have to work quite so hard or turn away those new clients. This is a definite win, win situation for you and the Educator.

So I hope now that you will take this Christmas advice on board. This was always a time that I used to dread but look forward to all of the same; the dread was purely because I knew how busy we were going to be, but as a team we even used to get together and make mince pies for our clients! Having these little tips and pointers just made life that little bit easier for all of us, both techs and clients.
