HARD SUMMER, LOS ANGELES

was when he opened for Kaskade on the ‘Freaks Of Nature’ tour this summer, and quite frankly we were blown away. The OWSLA stage performance at HARD Summer is nothing short of amazing again and we are blown away for a second time. The ADD that plagues music lovers of all genres subsides when he performs, as there really is an eclectic mix of all things good — house, electro, moombahton, dubstep and more. It’s awesome, and if you have yet to peep this guy, try to do it before it becomes impossible to get up close and personal.

With the absence of Brodinski, there’s a gap between Dirtybird’s Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke, but we don’t hear any complaints! There’s a different vibe inside the RBMA discotheque compared to other tents as it really feels like, well, a discotheque with great tunes and everybody dancing, an occasional fist pump here and there. It makes for a cool escape, if that is what is needed. Not to mention that the man himself, James Murphy, is set to close it out. Having just seen ‘Shut Up And Play The Hits’, the movie of LCD Soundsystem’s last performance, catching a glimpse of James feels like a rare sighting of some mystical creature on the brink of extinction. But, obviously, this dude isn’t going anywhere, and he makes that very clear with the set he throws down. If anyone has seen the movie, then you know there is a scene — a lengthy scene — of him shaving. Given his appearance,

that might have been the last shave that he had. We like Scruffy Murphy, but we like the set 25 times more than that.

What EDM festival is complete without a mesmerizing performance by the one and only Skrillex? It seems as though he gets hated on tirelessly on the interweb and by underground scenesters. Maybe it’s a ‘lonely at the top’ thing, but honestly this guy is a fucking incredible performer. If the music isn’t for you, OK, but the thousands of people in the crowd with his name on their shirts, hats and body parts (you name it) speak even louder volumes. He and his spaceship drive HARD Summer 2012 home, solidifying why he has headlined so many festivals this year alone. Even DJ Mag USA, who attempt to remain as unbiased as possible, are tempted to reach for one of the three Sharpies in our bag to tag ourselves. S-K-R… we refrain. It’s close though. ADRIANA CRUZ
