having sold out LA’s Staples Center on his Freaks Of nature tour, this month’s cover star Kaskade is a shining light of how hard work and determination can pay off as a dJ, producer and performer. But while EdM’s boom times are pouring riches on those who fit into its high octane, high emotion template, we also celebrate the less easily packaged and commodified pioneers whose work provided the groundwork for this revolution – like detroit techno stars Jeff Mills and robert hood. And let’s not forget the next generation who are forging new sounds, from the crunk-inspired beats of Baauer to the anything-goes eclecticism of Percussion Lab, the forum and club that has helped nurture the likes of Machinedrum and FaltydL. After all, ultimately the overground and underground are simply flip-sides of the same coin.
