CYCLE PARKING
FEATURE
Cambridge is blessed with thousands of free cycle racks outside just about every parade of shops around the city. Recently, some of these have been decorated by ‘guerrilla knitters’, much to the amusement and delight of local c yclists
BPA’S VIEW: COULD DO BETTER
‘For visitors to the city, or those who have to leave their bikes for long periods of time, it’s great that we have secure parking,’ he said. ‘It would be more convenient if there were even more facilities on offer, but we are better served than most places.’
Free parking Lesley Donahue, a visitor from Teeside, travelled to the city by train and then hired a cycle for her three-day stay, using both of the free cycle parks mentioned above. She said: ‘I’ve never seen so many bikes in one place! Compared to where I live, Cambridge has amazing facilities, and it has been great to know my hire cycle has been safe and sound. It’s defi nitely the way to go.’ Council worker John Llewellyn, however, had a slightly more jaundiced view: ‘I’ve had several bikes stolen over the years and another one disappeared last month, despite being very securely locked. ‘Cambridge is certainly better than most places, and it’s great to see these secure parking facilities springing up, but cycle theft is always going to be a problem.’

has been safe and sound
The BPA Parking Forum’s most recent position paper on cycle parking points out that, with more than 130,000 cycle thefts reported across the UK each year – and at least the same number going unreported – secure cycle parking ‘is needed for both short- and long-term purposes, in convenient on- and off-street locations. It makes the following recommendations: The interdependence of safe cycle routes and secure cycle parking must be emphasised to all interested parties;
Co-ordination of effort is required and this might best be provided by local authority implementation of a national guidance framework;
The design and installation standards developed by the Bike Parking and Security Association should be more widely publicised to those who provide cycle parking; and
BPA/ACPO should consider the possibility of extending the Safer Parking Scheme to cycle parking facilities.
