SKILLS FOR SUCCESS

NEWS

challenge, but it is not too late to address the problem.’

Asset Skills is looking for employers to participate in these projects, which will offer the chance to be part of an exciting group exploring the potential for real growth and change. For more information on the Talent Management and Higher Level Skills projects contact Vicky Bowring on vbowring@assetskills.org or call 01392 423 399.

Promoting parking careers The Asset Skills careers, information, advice and guidance project will, among other things, see more employers going into schools to talk about careers and opportunities.

Parking employers are invited to participate in the programme by registering for inclusion on a website that currently is under development. It will consist of an interactive UK map allowing teachers to hover over their geographical region to see the company logos of the businesses offering to support schools in that area. Schools liaise with Asset Skills, who liaise with the employer. Employers are under no obligation to accept every invitation. This system will give parking

employers an excellent opportunity to work with schools and discuss the many different career paths that are available within the sector.

Parking employers will benefit from this service, as well as the schools and students, by: ■ Improving recruitment links; ■ Working towards corporate social responsibility targets; ■ Ensuring better informed young people are entering the job market; ■ Improving image and relations in their community; ■ Developing skills in their own staff; ■ Bridging the gap between education and employment; and ■ Creating media interest and publicity opportunities.

Asset Skills has established a steering group to advise, monitor and quality-assure the programme with representation from key industry figures such as Adam Bidder from Q-Park and Rocky Datoo from the BPA. We welcome involvement from other parking employers/employees – either as steering group members or for registration on the new school/employer linking website.

Helping cut recruitment costs The Asset Skills Routes to Employment programme will help cut recruitment costs by enabling parking employers to source candidates who will have received specific pre-employment training relating to the parking sector.

Unemployed people, including ex- offenders, will receive training as part of their preparation for work. Trained candidates will then be referred to employers who will be invited to place vacancies on a new database.

A new social enterprise company, which will be the only organisation in parking to work on preparing candidates with employability skills, will be established. The company will work with specialist work programme training providers and partners to deliver pre-employment, industry-specific job role training.

‘Our Routes to Employment programme will ensure a pool of candidates equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to take up jobs in parking,’ says Bentley.

‘For the candidates, the objective is that they find work and stay in work
