SAFETY FIRST FOR
SCOTTISH UNIVERSITY University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been awarded Park Mark status for its Ayr Campus car – the first institute north of the border to receive the accolade. Ahead of the £81million Ayr Campus opening last summer, UWS consulted closely, throughout the planning, construction and completion of the build, with both Strathclyde Police and the BPA to ensure all Park Mark specifications would be met. Campus director Liz Kennedy expressed her
delight at the award. ‘To be the first Scottish university to be awarded this status is a significant achievement and highlights the university’s commitment to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students and visitors,’ she said Tom Porter of the BPA said: ‘I was delighted when the university applied for it. They have clearly demonstrated their commitment to the safety of students, staff and visitors and are deserving winners of the Park Mark award.’
WINSOME WOKING PARKS PRETTY
With much re-development ongoing in Woking town centre, Woking Borough Council has once again been successful in retaining Park Mark status for its four council-run, town centre car parks and its multi-storey car park.
Crime in these car parks has been low over the last two years, despite being used by around two million vehicles every year. Management practices are of a very good standard with a clear audit trail in place, constantly manned and monitored electronic

surveillance, good lighting and regular patrols by CEOs. Mike Bibby (British
Parking Association scheme development manager south east) said: ‘Although as we all know the current economic climate is particularly difficult for local authorities, with good management in place – particularly the efforts of Julian Lowndes (car parks operations manager) and his team – results can be achieved to ensure car park users feel safe when leaving their vehicles in the council’s care.’
