ROYAL RESULTS FOR QUEENSGATE

Regular readers of our Park Mark update may remember Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough winning the Park Mark award last year, following a refurbishment of four car parks. The annual reassessment was conducted in July 2012, and Queensgate Shopping Centre successfully retained the award. Since last year, crime has been reduced by almost two thirds, evidence that the messages preached by the Safer Parking Scheme improve standards and safety within car parking facilities. In addition to the programme of structural and cosmetic refurbishment of the parking areas and associated facilities – such as lifts – the team has spent more than £1.5m on a new control room CCTV, which will eventually monitor more than 400 cameras throughout the centre and car parks.

DIGGING DEEP IN MOLE VALLEY

Mole Valley residents will be pleased to hear that not only has the local council retained its existing Park Mark award for facilities in Leatherhead, with no crime-related incidents in the last year, but it has also gained a further three awards. The commended safe parking environments, provided by Mole Valley District Council, include the council offi ces, with other local parking facilities being

considered for the award under a rolling programme. Assessments were carried out by Mike Bessent (Surrey Police accredited assessor) and Mike Bibby, development manager for the BPA, who said: ‘I am pleased Mole Valley DC sees the benefi ts of the scheme. I would like to congratulate all personnel involved on the standards witnessed during the assessments.’

DURHAM GATES SECURE

The Gates Shopping Centre car park in Durham has been declared crime free for yet another year, under a recently undertaken Safer Parking Scheme reassessment and, as a result, retained their award status. The car parking facilities are managed by Savills on behalf of the Gates Shopping Centre.

York Teaching Hospital has been given the thumbs up by the police for providing a safe parking environment for visitors. Receipt of the Park Mark rewards their efforts to cut crime and reduce the fear of crime, and marks their parking facilities out as reaching a certain standard. Arthur Tomkins, head of security and car parking for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘It’s important to us that people feel safe when they park at

the hospital. Working with the police and building designers to increase safety has meant that we have reduced car crime at our facilities by 90 per cent. Good lighting and effective surveillance has made a huge difference.’ Phil Taylor from the BPA, added: ‘The public using this fantastic facility should know that the Hospital Trust has gone the extra mile to make certain that they are less likely to be victims of crime.’
