We need to ensure the skills are in place


within parking to start replacing the experience that will be lost over the next decade


ew programmes to help attract younger people into parking have been launched by Asset Skills, the industry skills body for parking. It follows the organisation’s recent research that shows four per cent of the parking workforce is aged under 25, while 49 per cent is over 45.


Four new projects to try to address this – and, at the same time, raise skills – are now under way. They include schemes in talent management, higher level skills, routes to employment and careers information, advice and guidance. Each project has received co-investment from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills through the Employer Investment Fund.


The talent management and higher level skills projects aim to roll out methods of nurturing workforce skills that have worked in other industries.


The structures for talent management in many organisations are still under- developed, and Asset Skills is prioritising this key activity through these two programmes.


‘We need to ensure the skills are in place within parking to start replacing the experience that will be lost over the next decade or so,’ says Sarah Bentley, chief executive of Asset Skills. ‘Our programmes will help address a number of areas, including helping employers to identify and foster talent in the workforce. Our Talent Management scheme draws on best practice models used by business giants like Google and BT, bringing them into the parking industry.’


A place for placements The Higher Level Skills project is bringing together parking and education like never before, with

work placements being arranged not just for undergraduates, but also for university and college tutors to help improve understanding of the skills needed by young people. ‘The higher level skills project will encourage more undergraduates to take up work placements in parking as part of their education,’ said Bentley. ‘The industry now needs to be seen as a career of choice. There is no doubt the number of experienced people leaving parking is presenting a significant
