Joyent How easy was the cloud deployment?
The biggest detractor in how easy it was to deploy a VPS was that you had to specify an SSH key for authorization with no option for password authentication. While this would make it rather easy for advanced users to provision multiple cloud instances at the same time, novice users are less likely to be able to understand how to generate or what an SSH key is. That said, they did provide links to guides for generating SSH keys for both Windows and Mac and I felt they thoroughly documented the process as well as possible.
How long did it take?
The entire provisioning process for our instance clocked in at close to an industry average of 14 minutes.
Was the interface easy to use?
The interface was very minimalistic with very little in the way of traditional options that I believe should be an industry standard. There was no way to reset the root password or the SSH key specified at creation. There was no way to launch a console. In fact, there were only three options available for the instance: Reboot, Shutdown or Delete.
Was the installation of cPanel & WHM easy?
The installation was straight forward and the default CentOS cloud image required no modifications to run our installation script right after deployment. Once again, I’d like to see an auto install ISO image. I saw no way to create snapshots.
How was the process for adding more CPU & RAM to the Cloud Instance? There was no way within the web interface to increase the CPU or RAM on an existing instance. I was able to increase an existing instance by contacting their support department and requesting it but I believe that it should be expected in the cloud hosting industry to be able to manage your cloud instance on the fly without waiting for a support ticket to be filled.
Was the process of adding additional IP addresses easy? There was no way within the web interface to add an IP address nor was there any indication via text that it was even possible. It required contacting their support department to get information on adding additional IP address to an instance. There was also no way to deploy an instance with more than one IP initially.
Are there remote backup options and were you able to enable them? I was unable to locate within the web interface a location to manage any sort of remote backup options.
Mobile interface
There appear to be no iOS or Android applications offered for management of the cloud instances.
Summary
I don’t believe that Joyent is the best choice for users looking to manage and deploy cPanel servers at this time. But with the addition of some improvements to its API and other features expected from the industry it could easily become a better choice for cPanel users in the future.
