Over the years I have used a lot of plugins, addons, and hooks with cPanel & WHM. One plugin I install first every time is ConfigServer Security and Firewall, also known as CSF or CSF/LFD.

The plugin is easy enough to download and install. Download a copy for free from
http://configserver.com/ then unzip and run the cPanel specific installer. Refresh WHM, and like magic, ConfigServer Security & Firewall is in WHM ready to use.
I would like to take a step back and remind you that no security method will make a server hacker-proof. These steps, when taken, make hacking a server less likely. They may not even slow an attacker down, but these are good practices worthy of your review. The steps recommended by this plugin, and my article, are up to you, the system administrator. In some cases, there are some risks that you may deem acceptable, or some protections that may impair your business model. The power to make these decisions ultimately lies with uid 0.
Configuring CSF/LFD can be very time consuming. Much like picking options to compile into a kernel, I find the more time I spend, the happier I am with the results.
The configuration
file is also portable from one CSF instance. I highly recommend setting the testing mode to 1, or on while you are working the configuration file over, and save often. I also recommend living with a configuration for a few days before you deploy it to several servers. CSF/LFD will generate a lot of email with valuable information about the server. Some of this email is noise. Determining which messages are noise is worth sorting out before you mass-deploy. The last thing you want to do is create an email generator you ignore. Each setting in the configuration file is documented with a paragraph, and more can be found at
http://forum.configserver.com. You get the same from editing the
csf.conf in vi or from WebHostManager.
