Linode How easy was the cloud deployment?
The biggest problem was actually finding what I was looking for on the page. How long did it take?
Not only was it one of the fastest provisions I’ve seen in the industry, they actually show in their interface how long it actually took for each step of the process.
Was the interface easy to use?
The UI could use work to de-clutter and make itself more user friendly. I probably stared at the page for a good minute before finding the boot button once the cloud was created. That said, it was straight forward to navigate and everything that I expected from an interface was present, if not a little hidden.
Was the installation of cPanel & WHM easy?
The installation completed without problems and the default CentOS cloud image required no modifications to run our installation script right after deployment. I’d like to see an auto install ISO image for cPanel available although this could be done on your own via their custom template creation tool.
How was the process for adding more CPU & RAM to the Cloud Instance? They claim a 15 minute process to re-size and I found this to be a fair and accurate estimation. They offer no “quick” way to re-size the instance without disk provisioning which I believe really should be an industry standard at this point.
Was the process of adding additional IP addresses easy? Was selectable via their interface but threw an error when attempting to add one: “Additional IPv4 addresses require technical justification. Please open a Support Ticket describing your requirement.”
Are there remote backup options and were you able to enable them? One button press and Linode’s backup system handled everything. The entire backup system was explained thoroughly and I felt that they made it as easy as it could be. It provides four backup slots. Three of the slots are executed and rotated automatically: a daily backup, a twenty-seven day old backup, and an eight to fourteen day old backup. The fourth backup slot is a user-initiated snapshot and remains in place until another user-initiated snapshot is taken.
Mobile interface
They appear to only have an application on iOS. Summary
Linode had a very solid offering with some minor detractors. I believe that they could definitely use improvement to their management interface as it seems cluttered to me as I found myself having to search down certain features but was able to eventually find them. I’d like to see a cPanel install template available to ease the installation procedure and their lack of an Android application is disappointing. All in all, I believe that they would be a solid choice for somewhat experienced administrators.
