Games helped rejuvenate LEGO UK boss says video games drive toy sales

by Christopher Dring & Dominic Sacco

TOY MANUFACTURER LEGO says that video games have helped the firm beat the economic downturn. Traveller’s Tales’ games – which have included LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones, LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Batman and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean– have been regular best sellers since 2005. LEGO’s VP and general manager for UK and Ireland Drew Brazer said: “If I go back to 2008 and 2009, that’s when our business really started to take off. And we weren’t exactly sure

why, so we did some consumer research to understand this. What’s really explaining this meteoric rise in sales? “One of the key factors was the synergy between the LEGO video games and the products. Boys were playing these games, engaged in LEGO, seeing LEGO products come to life in the video game, and it created tremendous interest for them to go out and buy the physical product. So it’s been great.” LEGO Lord of the Rings is due on November 23rd. LEGO City Undercoveris set for release exclusively on Wii U and 3DS.

ONM redesign arrives alongside Wii U by James Batchelor

FIRST DETAILS have emerged on Future’s plans for its revamped Official Nintendo Magazine. The first issue will be released on November 21st – just nine days before the UK launch of Wii U.

The magazine will include a comprehensive guide to the console’s launch, including reviews of the major games and FAQs

about the GamePad and the Wii U itself.

There will also be a new section based around Miiverse, the social network integrated into Wii U. This will be dedicated to Nintendo’s online activity and social media. Readers will even receive two free Wii U-themed drinks coasters. Earlier this year, MCV reported that the publication would undergo a refresh to

coincide with Nintendo’s new console. Even the ONMteam has seen some changes, with former editor Chandra Nair returning to head up the new magazine.

“The industry needs a new home console to get excited about again,” said Nair. Last month, Future Publishing closed Nintendo Gamer, relegating it to an online-only format. Future: 020 7042 4000
