Many amateurs make the mistake of stabbing at the ball or not finishing the swing. Make sure to follow through with a full swing and accelerate through the ball to get it airborne, keeping your head down and behind the ball after contact.

Q: How far behind the ball should I hit? A: The ideal location to hit the ball is one to two inches behind the golf ball so it can ride out on a layer of sand.

Don’t be afraid to draw in the sand while you practice. Just don’t do it on the course, otherwise it will cost you a two-stroke penalty. Start by drawing two parallel lines in the sand that are two feet away from each other and at a 40-degree angle to the hole. Make sure the lines are about four feet in length. Place the ball right in the middle of the forward line and your feet right behind the other line. Next open the clubface and align it to the target. This visual aid gives you an idea of where you are swinging.
