Q&A

Alex Smith

ALEX SMITH started his love affair with golf as a

9-year-old after his grandfather made him a set of clubs. Without any lessons, just advice from Dad and Grand- dad, Smith went on to play four years of high school varsity golf before letting his clubs collect dust due to the demands of a prolifi c football career at the University of Utah and eventual selection as the NFL’s number one overall draft pick in 2005.

For only the second time in his eight-year NFL career, the 49ers starting quarterback won’t have to learn a new playbook in the off-season, allowing him to focus on im- proving his fundamentals and physicality. With the team coming off an NFC Championship game appearance, ex- pectations are once again high for the storied franchise due to a stingy defense and the cerebral athlete at the helm of the offense.

Even with little time for golf, the 28-year-old typically

shoots in the mid-80s and calls Pasatiempo and Pebble Beach two of his favorite layouts. –Hilary Heieck

And now it’s hit or miss as a pro during the off-season. I don’t really play during the season at all, but in the off-season some- times more than oth- ers. During the last 18 months I haven’t played much because

of the birth of my son; it’s harder to justify getting out on the course. •••

What is the best golf tip you have received? Good question. For me tempo is so important when I’m playing well. I haven’t taken many lessons—my grandpa and dad taught me how to play and I ended up making the high school team as a freshman. That got me to quit baseball because I made varsity golf and chose to play golf all four years. •••

Who comprises your dream foursome? Well, my son is too young to play. Getting to play with Jack Nicklaus would be special, and it would be fun to play with Phil (Mickelson), and let’s
