From the Editor A

fter seven years at the helm of this magazine, Hilary Heieck has moved on to a new opportunity. While you will continue to see much of what you have always enjoyed in the magazine’s con-

tent and design, you will also notice an evolving ethos. NCGA Golf, as the journal of the great game in this region, will continue to guide you to terrific places to play, both here and at your favorite vacation des- tinations. It will help you play faster, play within the rules and correctly utilize the handicap system. The magazine will save you money by highlight- ing member benefits as well as travel and regional

course offers. Finally, the magazine will serve to celebrate members’ achievements. To that end, you will see a new section, “Tour- nament Central,” in this edition that covers NCGA championships in a unique manner. The section, which will be part of each publication, both supplements and complements the popular page of the same name on the Association’s digital home, NCGA.org, where you will still find complete coverage, including scorecards and photo galleries. With the complete renovation of Poppy Hills

approaching (beginning in March 2013), Golfweek’s architecture expert tells us why the courses of the gold- en age of golf course design in the early part of the last century are so revered. The new Poppy Hills will reflect the sensibility found at these courses, and when the renovation begins next year, NCGA Golf and NCGA. org will keep you apprised of the project’s progress. Saratoga Country Club (pictured) graces the cover of this issue, and award-winning contributor Ron Salsig explains why you should get to know this nine- hole gem. As part of our commitment to highlighting outstanding regional travel opportunities, Sun Valley, Idaho, is profiled beginning on page 34.

What a U.S. Open it was! On a wide-open final

day, Webb Simpson emerged as the winner, and NCGA Golf was there to chronicle the action, aided by the stunning photography of the renowned Joann Dost. This edition also explores the frenetic daily routine experienced by some of the region’s prominent golf personalities in “A Day in the Life.” And Alan Shipnuck’s extended essay on creating a game story for Sports Illustrated on a tight deadline is especially entertaining. This issue also introduces the new Member Advantage Tee Time Portal, your online ticket to member-exclusive rates at some of the region’s finest courses, including private facilities. Membership in the NCGA is a reflection of your

zeal for the game; this magazine will continue to chronicle and support that passion. I’m delighted and proud to perpetuate the superb legacy that NCGA Golf represents.

Enjoy!
