TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
47th NCGA Public Links Championship Trent Tessler | Spyglass Hill | April 2-3
Trent Tessler captured the Public Links title by a two-stroke margin over Redding’s Russell Nygard and Ricky Stockton of Salinas. Despite being only two shots off the lead going into the day, the San Jose resident couldn’t imagine hoisting the
Lloyd Del Nore Perpetual Trophy. “I was holding my game together with duct tape and bailing wire,” he said. “I didn’t think I’d win. My game really isn’t that sharp, but somehow it happened.” It hap-
pened because of outstanding play around the greens; Tessler had no three putts over 36 holes and several up-and- down pars.
51st NCGA Senior Championship Michael Brannan | Spyglass Hill | April 12-13
Michael Brannan shot an impressive 2-under 70 with four birdies and two bogeys in his final round to earn a two-shot victory over first-round co-leader Herb Jensen. An accomplished golfer,
Brannan added a fourth NCGA major to his resume. What makes his case unique, though, is that the last one he won was more than 35
years ago. It was in 1976 when Brannan beat Scott Hoyt 3&1 for the NCGA Amateur Match Play title. He also has three NCGA Player of the Year awards to his credit (1973, ’74 and ’76), a U.S. Junior Amateur title (’71), an NCGA Junior Championship (’73) and two California State Amateur titles (’73 and ’76).
