Stump the NCGA Rules Expert
TAKING RELIEF FROM A LATERAL WATER HAZARD
Bob asks: Q. My ball crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard that was ad- jacent to a bunker. If I choose to take my two club-length option, may I drop the ball in the bunker? A. Yes, Rule 26-1 does not prohibit you from dropping a ball in the bunker when taking relief from a lateral water hazard. Decision 33-8/37.5
permits the Committee to provide dropping zones or series of drop- ping zones on the fairway side of the bunker if they do not wish to require the players to drop in the bunker in this situation.
COUNTING STROKES Dave asks: Q. My tee shot on a par three ap- peared to roll into a water hazard. I found a ball lying on the bank within the water hazard. I made a stroke at the ball, but missed. I then realized it was not my ball and that my ball had rolled into the water hazard at a point where it was unplayable. I took a proper drop from the hazard, chipped onto the green, and took two putts to complete the hole. What was my score? A. Seven—four actual strokes, two penalty strokes for playing a stroke at the wrong ball under Rule 15-3 and one penalty stroke for taking relief from the water hazard under Rule 26- 1. NOTE: The definition of a stroke is the forward movement of the club with the intent to strike the ball. It doesn’t matter if you make contact or not. When you swung and missed the wrong ball you incurred a penalty of two strokes under Rule 15-3, but the stroke itself does not count in the score.
SHARING DISTANCE INFORMATION
John asks: Q. I am aware that I am permitted to share distance information with my fellow competitor or opponent, without penalty. Am I obligat- ed to share the information? A. You are correct, Rule 8-1 permits you to exchange distance information. No, the Rules do not require you to share distance information.
PUTTING PRACTICE AFTER HOLE COMPLETION
Mario asks: Q. After I have completed the play of the hole and replaced the flagstick, may I practice putting as long as I do not hold up play? A. Yes, Rule 7-2 permits practice putting on the hole just completed in both stroke play and match play. However, the Com- mittee may choose to adopt, as a condition of the competi- tion, rules prohibiting practice on or near the putting green of the hole last played. The PGA Tour, for example, adopts such a condition.
