Marsh Claims State Amateur Title K
evin Marsh won the 101st California State
Amateur Championship in late June, beating Ben Geyer 4 and 3 in the 36- hole final. Marsh, a Santa Barbara resident, turned the match into his favor with a birdie on the par-5 12th hole on the opening 18 at La Cumbre CC in Santa Barbara to take a 1-up lead. Marsh would never allow Geyer to square the match from that point forward, cruising to victory after the 15th hole of the second 18. After 18 holes the
champion held a 2-up lead on Geyer. The Arbuckle resident would cut Marsh’s lead to 1 up with a birdie on
the 20th hole, but Marsh responded accordingly winning three of the next four holes to go 4 up. Geyer made one last push—as he had done so many times over the week—by winning the 26th and 28th holes to cut the lead to 2 up. But again Marsh responded by winning the 30th and 31st holes to go 4 up with five to play. When both play- ers halved the next two holes with pars, that was all Marsh needed to seal the deal and become the new State Amateur champion. Over 33 holes, the cham- pion made eight birdies and one eagle. “I’ve been lucky enough

to win a lot of golf tourna- ments, but this one is right up there as good as any of them,” said Marsh.
Just getting to the final
was a tribute to Geyer’s fortitude, as the runner- up repeatedly came back from large deficits over the week, and endured over- time in Friday’s quarter and semifinal matches totaling 42 holes. Geyer earned the 15th seed after stroke-play qualifying while Marsh took the fifth seed. Defend- ing champion Bhavik Patel blazed the course in going 13 under par for medalist honors. Patel would bow out in the quarterfinals.
Kevin Marsh Marsh, a two-time
Stocker Cup winner and the 2005 USGA Mid-Amateur champion, ended the recent domination by collegiate players winning the Cali- fornia State Amateur as the previous six champions were all collegiate players. If Geyer had won he would have been the seventh straight to do so, but instead Marsh becomes the first mid-amateur to capture the title since 2005.
