that has stood the test of time. This, thanks to a deft restoration and enhance- ment by RTJ II many decades later. With a full complement of stream car-

ries and strategic bunkers well positioned to catch errant shots, Trail Creek plays across its beautiful, watery namesake seven times on the front nine alone. Coupled with astounding views of the surround- ing mountains and prevailing crystal blue skies, one can become easily distracted. The sixth hole provides a good ex-

ample. At first blush, this short, uphill par 3 seems relatively tame. It’s only 147 yards from the back teeing area. But a precise tee shot is imperative, thanks to a left-to-right crosswind, all kinds of trouble short and the need to stay below the hole as the green slopes severely from back to front.

With 45 golf holes – all designed through the Robert Trent Jones Sr. architecture pedigree – Sun Valley is constantly evolving.

WHITE CLOUDS COURSE Sun Valley, Trail Creek and White

Clouds are names chosen to reflect their defining characteristics. White Clouds Course certainly does, alighting on high and over- looking the valley floor. White Clouds is the cre-

ation of Northern California native Don Knott, of Knott & Linn Golf Design Group. A member of Stanford University Golf Club, Knott counts Princeville Prince on Kauai, Links at Spanish Bay and National Golf Club in New York among his past experience. Add White Clouds to that esteemed list. A 3,605-

yard, 9-hole Alpine-style course, it bobs and weaves along mountain ridges, and includes an array of eclectic holes, no two remotely alike. The long, par-4 eighth hole is memo-

rable for its view, its sinewy brawn and its elevation drop from tee to fairway. Measuring 523 yards from the tips, tee shots stay in the air forever, which, along with the altitude, helps mitigate the length. One needs to favor the right side of the fairway due to a severely sloped fairway. The second shot plays downhill and should also favor the right side of this large, undu- lating green. Avoid the deep bunkers and fallout area left of this green and one can successfully navigate this beautiful beast.
