Kids can’t get enough of the ‘powerful’ fun

A full roster of 22 kids is proof enough that McCurtain County kids love Kilowatt Kids’ Camp. The half-day camp was held in Idabel on June 6-7, and in Hugo June 20-21.Camp instructors said the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves while learning about where electricity and how to stay safe around it. Many participants who attended Kilowatt Camp last year were disappointed to learn that they will be too old to attend camp next year.

CEC workshop serves up an energy-saving earful

CEC’s Brad Kendrick, along with co-op energy specialist John Drake, served up a full load of efficiency tips during the workshop, which took place on April 10 at the CEC office in Hugo.

Kendrick said members in attendance expressed great interest in learning the best ways to lower home energy costs. “The main thing they wanted to know was, would the more costly energy efficiency improvements truly pay off over the long term,” Kendrick said.

The CEC answer? Some yes, others not so much. “Insulation, for instance, is always a win-win for the homeowner,” Kendrick said . For southeast Oklahoma climate, homeowners should install at least 12 inches of rolled or blown insulation in their attic to see a difference. Adding insulation to walls will help even more. The wonderful thing about insulation is you’ll get back every dime

you’ve invested,” Kendrick pointed out.

New windows are another “big ticket item that homeowners consider in their quest to save energy. One Hugo couple attending the workshop said they had recently installed energy efficiency windows in their home and

had noticed an improvement in their comfort level. “Windows will absolutely make your home feel more comfy, but they may not result in a dramatic reduction in heating and cooling costs,” Kendrick said.

Members who want more efficient windows might consider a less expensive option. According to energy experts, clear window film available at Walmart for $7, provides enough film to cover five windows. Kendrick applied the invisible film on windows at his home. “I just got five energy efficient windows for $7, and it increased the comfort level in my home immediately,” he said.

The workshop covered low costs, no cost and more costly energy improvements. It also explained how members can take advantage of CEC’s energy saving audits and loan programs to help cover the cost of new energy efficient appliances, heating and air units, water heaters and more.
