Energy-efficient LEDs provide lighting for the whole train


Teknoware is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, as area manager Jukka Kärkkäinen explains, having delivered LED lighting solutions for public transportation for over 10 years already.

o far, LEDs have mainly been used as reading


lights and for lighting in special locations. However, now when the luminous efficiency of LEDs has increased to well over 100 lm/W, the lifecycle costs of LED luminaires can


compete with


those of traditional fluorescent lighting.


In 2010, Teknoware received an order to renew the interior lighting on Holland’s local trains. This project is significant in that it represents one of the first trains to be equipped with only LED lighting. The work will be performed by the Dutch company NedTrain and the project includes approximately 200 two-storey rail cars.

light produced by different LED production lots and luminaires remains within the strict tolerances agreed on with the customer. So far, the biggest challenge facing LED technology has been variations in light colour. Because manufacturers of white LEDs are unable to produce LEDs with uniform colour yet, they have to classify the white LEDs received from production into different colour temperature categories (BIN).


Responsibility for producing luminaires of uniform colour depends solely on the competence of the luminaire supplier. The manufacturer has to select the LEDs and other materials very accurately in order to be able to supply an entire series of luminaires in the required colour.


One of the additional challenges in this project was new design requirements that could only be achieved with LEDs. A good example of the products supplied for the project is a round and very flat luminaire of about one meter in diameter, which was inspired by the opening in the dome of the Pantheon building in Rome. This solution can only be implemented by combining LED technology with special optics.


The lighting for the NedTrain project will include about 10 different luminaire types, the largest of which utilises nearly 100 LEDs. All in all, nearly half a million LEDs will be used in this project. Teknoware uses mathematical light modelling to ensure that the colour of the

Teknoware LED lighting applications make it possible to combine several special features. The control unit for active dimming uses sensors to adjust the interior lighting of a vehicle based on exterior light conditions. Automatic lighting level control significantly reduces the lifecycle costs (LCC) of lighting. Energy costs are clearly the biggest single expense of lighting during the lifecycle of a vehicle.


Using colour changing RGB- LEDs different atmospheres can be created in the separate compartments, but the same technique can also be used for example to guide passengers by changing opening doors’ lighting to green and closing doors’ to red.


In June 2011 the company received the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) Certificate.
