Managing the data

Southeastern has this to say about the development of the RCM system: “Turning this from a science project into a useful tool has led us to look closely at the way in which data needs to be managed and presented to several different user groups within our operations team.

“Each separate data element has to be ‘tuned’ to set a level for an alert message. Critical data streams have to be combined to tell a story. The ability to email alerts to key users such as driver operations and shunters is critical. Interventions can be planned; trains routed to depot and spares can be assembled in anticipation of a defect arriving. We are focused on three areas and

developing reports, alerts and

statistical analysis: - Train performance and degradation by component and system.

- Operator performance including the driver, shunter and maintenance technician to identify best practice. - Train to track interface to identify current draw, current spikes and real- time incident reporting without visiting the train.”
