www.AAA.com about batteries
Short quiz, true or false: Winter cold shortens the life of your car battery? Summer heat is harder than winter cold on battery life?
For many people, the first answer is a no-brainer.
For years, TV commercials typically depicted frigid commuters futilely attempting to start their cars, and opening the hoods in a snowstorm to check for the trouble. The message you’re supposed to remember: Cold weather = time for a new battery. But the second answer may surprise you. Summer
is harder on batteries than winter. In fact, summer heat can kill a battery 33 percent faster than winter cold. On a day with 90-degree weather, the temperature inside the engine compartment can soar to 140 degrees or higher. Air conditioning works the battery even harder. Maybe you already knew this
“ Many of us don’t think of battery life when we’re driving into the mountains or out-of- state for our summer vacation.”
and long ago took the necessary steps to avoid a roadside service call. But the volume of calls we receive every July suggests that many of us don’t think of battery life when we’re driving into the mountains or out-of-state for our summer vacation. So what should all of us do to ensure that we’re not caught with a dead battery this summer?
1. If your car’s battery is more than three years old, get it tested by a trained technician at any AAA-Approved Auto Repair facility (See a complete listing on pages 46–47.)
2. Inspect the battery case. Is it bulging, cracked, or leaking fluid? If so, get it replaced immediately.
3. If your battery is equipped with removable filler caps, check the battery fluid. Heat evaporates the fluid more rapidly. Consider replacing it with a newer, flush-top battery.
Don’t let a dead battery interfere with the summer vacation you’ve been
looking forward to all year. Add a battery check to your do-to list, and save time and aggravation. That way we’re less likely to see you on the roadside, with your hood open.
