Aspen, August 22 and 23. Aspen hits top speed as the only city to host two stages of USAPCC: the finish for Stage 3 on August 22 and the Stage 4 start on August 23. Fan-friendly race activities include both finish and start festivals, music and a citizens race. The Aspen/Snowmass Women’s Pro Challenge—the only event for
professional and elite women cyclists during the all-male USAPCC—is August 20–23. Amateur street and mountain bike cyclists can strap into their own foot
pedals at a number of events around this same time. There’s also a back- country marathon August 26. A mountain-themed film fest screens August 23–26. Also in August are
professional theatre, the 63rd season of the famed Aspen Music Festival and School and an exquisite Summer Dance Series. Afterward, imbibe in Aspen’s more than 110 restaurants and bars—
especially a double cheeseburger at Ajax Tavern (see “Destination burg- ers,” p. 18), shop in some of the 235 boutiques, use the extensive Aspen Recreation Center, hike the glorious Maroon Bells and, finally, collapse at one of the 75 lodges, many of which accept dogs. Visit

Beaver Creek, August 23. With race action at full tilt, Beaver Creek hosts the end of Stage 4 with a full-on celebration, including live music. A citizen’s ride rolls out prior to race day.
Hikers can trek in the almost two million acres of national forest, or mountain bike and then shop at unique boutiques.
August 17, 18, 24 and 25 cooks up culinary demonstrations at Beaver
Creek Plaza, and on August 19 it’s the finish of the TransRockies Run. Prior to USAPCC there are art, music and wine festivals in early August, and early September brings more culinary demonstrations and an Oktoberfest. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy scenic hikes, outdoor ice skating year
round, a high mountain adventure tour by jeep, chairlift and horseback rides, and golf. The Excellent Grouse Mountain Grill prepares a memorable meal, or go
French at Mirabelle. Find luxury and pampering at The Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, and The Charter at Beaver Creek offers cozy condos. Visit
www.BeaverCreek.com.
Breckenridge, August 24. Stage 5 starts in this über quaint Summit County gold-mining town. This host city spins out a party with a community bike event, film fest, music, an expo and more. Outdoorsmen can hike past abandoned mining camps, mountain or
street bike, lead a summer dogsled team or horseback ride. Others might prefer a green beauty or metalsmithing workshop at the
Breckenridge Arts District downtown campus. Or, get busy at the interac- tive Edwin Carter Museum & Discovery Center, a journey into the life of a log cabin naturalist. Great walking tours include through the nationally recognized historic downtown, saloons, mines or an evening haunted tour.
