Howling with excitement, hound dogs sprint off the start at the Grasmere Sports and Show puppy trails.
Puppy trails, aggrieved sheep
England’s picturesque Lake District puts a different twist on sports. At a centuries-old yearly fair in Grasmere, Cumbria, shepherds’ competitive spirits sometimes got the better of them. The social fete fi nally became the Grasmere Sports and Show 160 years ago—an annual event each Sunday bank holiday in August (August 26, 2012) that features several unique com- petitions. Sprinters tackle a steep hill known as a “fell” from the old Norse term “fjall” or mountain. Younger children race fi rst, red-faced and pant- ing in the cold mist. Humans aren’t the only ones to tackle the gradient climbs. Ever since the
Brits outlawed fox hunting in 2005, dog lovers have been selectively breed- ing athletic hounds to participate in their own fell races. Before the puppy trails, which precede the adult dog trails, judges drag an anise- and par- affi n-fi lled bag over a fi ve-mile route. Trainers position their young pups, which strain at the leashes and join in a chorus of yipping and howling, on the starting line. At the start, the young hounds race over fences, up a hill, then back
down through a sheep pasture. The faster pups come hurtling down the verdant slope and scatter the frightened sheep, who quickly settle to graz- ing once again. As the second puppy group comes bursting through the pasture gate, the sheep scatter again kicking and bleating loudly. A woman standing in Wellington boots and an oil-cloth coat, leans to her friend and says in a wry tone, “There’s two sheep really quite aggrieved on that fell.” It’s these up-close glimpses of typi- cal British wit and humor that make attending Britain’s unusual competi- tions worthwhile.
