bfa companion celebrates 30 years in franchising

Peter Stern, a bfa companion and figure in national and international franchising, marks 30 years of work in the franchising industry this month.

Peter was awarded the companionship and made honorary vice president of the bfa for ‘outstanding personal contribution to the benefit of franchising’ in 1999. The bfa’s companionship award recognises individuals that have made a significant contribution to the franchise industry and the bfa itself.

Peter started out in his career with

NatWest, heading up the bank’s franchising department in 1982 and later setting up his own franchise consultancy PDS International Franchising in 2000. On his 30 years in the industry, Peter comments that the biggest change he has witnessed is the growth of support and understanding of the franchise concept. He says: “So many more people understand it these days and it’s due to the diligence of banks and the bfa. A lot of credit is due to the ethics of the association – they [are] scrupulous about cowboys and operations with get-rich-quick promises.” Peter also adds that within the same time period knowledge of franchising amongst the wider public has also grown. He says: “Far more people are aware of franchising as a business type these days – there’s generally more acknowledgement that franchising is worthwhile.” Happy anniversary, Peter!

The finalists have been invited to present to the judging panel, face-to-face, on the 15 and 16 May. The winners in each of the three categories will be announced at the 23rd British Franchisor of the Year Awards gala dinner on 21 June at the Telford International Centre.

Cathryn Hayes, head of franchising, HSBC, said: “What these businesses have in common is the implementation of innovative practices that are driving industry standards. The HSBC Franchisee Support Award recognises these outstanding franchisors for the strategic direction and support they offer their network of franchisees. Their stories are an inspiration to businesses of all sizes across the UK.”

Brian Smart, director general, bfa, said:

“We are seeing businesses challenge industry standards and employ ethical business practices in order to inspire future franchisors and franchisees. Our finalists are being

recognised for doing just that. The bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Awards offer a chance for UK franchisors to be acknowledged for these successes and we very much look forward to showcasing the best of the best at our gala dinner in June.”

Sean Hammond, head of franchising,

Express Newspapers, said: “We received a high standard of entries this year and have seen a real focus on franchisors building and maintaining their brand, which is increasingly challenging as business becomes progressively more international and competition increases on a global scale. The bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Awards, supported by Express Newspapers, provides a platform for the most innovative and inspiring brand builders to share their successes and be rewarded for their achievements.”
