global division of an American automotive corporation, Mike took stock of his current financial position to determine the direction of his next career move. The results shocked him. When he analysed his pension statements, it transpired that after 20 years of contributions, it was worth exactly what he had paid into it. By contrast, when Mike had his home

valued for remortgage purposes around the same time, it became apparent that the amount of equity he had earned over the last eight years was double the amount of his pension investments. As Mike, who lives with his family in Stockport, Cheshire, explains: “Considering my wife and I hadn’t made any massive improvements to the property, such as an extension or loft conversion, this was a huge wake-up call. It made me realise that I had to do something different. And quickly.” Another incentive for pursuing a career

in property and not going back into the corporate environment was a conversation with one of his children. When Mike told his eleven-year-old son that he was looking for a new job, he asked, “Dad, is this the job where you stay at home? I miss you.” Having spent the previous 20 years working 80-hour weeks and spending a considerable amount of time away from home overseas, Mike realised that not only did his pension provisions have to change, but his whole lifestyle too. “I wanted to be able to do simple things, such as collect my children from school or take my wife to a coffee shop to just sit and chat. I felt that if I didn’t get off the corporate merry-go-round and actively pursue a different route, then I would just be existing, rather than enjoying life, and my family wouldn’t get the best of me either. That’s when I came to the conclusion that

t was a long overdue review of his pension plans in 2009 that started Mike Anderson on his journey towards building a property portfolio. Following his departure from a high-profile role as the MD for a

organisation to work with that matched his own ethics and strong values, and also where he could play an active part in the development of not only his own property portfolio but also, by using his corporate skill sets, those of others within the PPP network. As Mike explains: “The fact that Platinum

encourages this network of like-minded, entrepreneurial people to help each other is fantastic, and that played as big a part of my decision to be a franchise partner as the financial and business side.” He continues: “I could see that Steve Bolton and his team were totally aligned with my own beliefs and values of the right way to conduct oneself in business. Having spent a lot of time in previous roles profiling and understanding people to ensure that I recruited the right individuals, those same skills helped me to assess the potential of working with PPP, and gave me the confidence that I was making the right choice.” Within months of joining as a franchise

partner, Mike had completed his first HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) property in Stockport, and seven months later a second, just up the road. With two properties renovated and fully tenanted, Mike then bought his third HMO, also in Stockport, in September 2011, with further developments already in planning. starting my own business would give me more freedom. Given that I’d also realised property was a viable option, I decided to combine the two.” Having established that building a

property portfolio was the route he wanted to pursue, Mike started to research the opportunities available. In late 2009, thinking that buying into a franchise would offer a ready-made infrastructure, he started to explore franchisors operating in the property sector. At this point, he discovered Platinum Property Partners, making contact with them at the National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham. But it was more than the fact that PPP

offered an exceptional franchise opportunity. One of Mike’s main criteria was to find an

in the last two years as a PPP franchise partner, Mike says: “I would never have achieved this level of financial freedom if I had stayed within the corporate environment, paying each month into an under-performing pension. Now, not only do I have a healthy monthly income, I am also building significant capital by redeveloping properties, so I have met both my short-term and long-term monetary goals with PPP.” He continues: “But the best thing is that

I now have a lifestyle I could never have achieved previously. My wife and I now have the time to nip for a coffee whenever we want, and if the family want to go on holiday, these days it’s a question of how long would we like to be away for, rather than ‘can I get the time off?’” But there is something else – says Mike:

“My golf handicap has improved because I’ve finally had some quality time on the course. In fact, I’ve got it down by about a third! What more can you ask for?” n
