Robust multihead weigher for larger metal parts


Hastamat Verpackungstechnik GmbH recently supplied and installed a weighing and packing line


for continuous packing of heavy duty pressed parts. Here the company describes the robust design and construction required to meet this challenging application.

used for the packing of these products. In practice, these solutions can have a serious disadvantage. Originally the multihead weighers were developed for totally different products, e.g. the food industry. For the dosing and packing of metal parts, extremely robust construction is required. Conventional multihead weighers from the food industry often do not meet these requirements and are, therefore, not suitable for continuous operation in these challenging environments.


For a customer in the presswork industry, Hastamat has


developed a multihead weigher of the CP-series in a special design, matching exactly the requirements for the weighing and dosing of metal parts. Plain washers, with a diameter of up to 65mm and unit piece weights of up to 130g, are filled into cartons with a filling weight of up to 7kg. The complete line consists of a product feeding system, a Hastamat 14-head multihead weigher for metal products and a carton filling system. The metal parts are delivered to the vibratory feeding chute of the multihead weigher by a flighted elevator. The surface of the feeding chute and the surface of the


vibratory dosing chutes of the multihead weigher have an industrial fibre lining. This lining minimises the noise and

he industrial manufacturing of metal parts is normally fully automated. In many cases it is about standard


reduces the wear and moreover increases the output. The other surfaces in contact with product are additionally protected against abrasion by an extremely thick polymer coating. To control the product feeding system, the filling level at the


central feeding hopper is determined by a weighing cell located underneath the central distribution plate. Hastamat highlights that for heavy products this method is superior compared to any photocell method and enables a more consistent and controlled feed to the dosing chutes. Subsequently the metal parts are transferred into the


weighing bins via the dosing bins, both equipped with electric motor driven bin flaps and automatic locking mechanisms. Besides the constructional reinforcement, all bins are protected with additional, quick-changeable, baffle plates made of polyethylene. The material used has a very high resistance to wear, very good sliding characteristics and ensures excellent shock absorbance. The special benefit of this construction is that the heavy metal parts always bounce onto the fixed baffle plates and not onto the flexible flaps, avoiding damage and wear of the flaps. After quick determination of the best combination of weights


for achieving the target weight, the products are transferred into the collecting bin through coated product slides. Filling of the cartons is done by a pneumatic dipping hopper. The products can also be transferred into other packages or directly into the filling tube of a vertical form, fill, and seal machine.
