EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW continued

Hilti’s third generation

Hilti showed a third generation model of its TE 60 combi hammer incorporating a new dust removal system designated the DRS BK, designed to remove 95% of potentially

hazardous particles. The manufacturer’s Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) system is incorporated to decrease HAV levels. Also on show was the new DD 150-U diamond coring system, which has a 2,200watt motor and can drill holes of 8-162mm diameter. Scheduled to be launched in May, it will replace the existing DD 130 model. Other new introductions included a 22V cordless impact wrench, and more tools on this voltage platform will be introduced later this year.

Receiving its first public showing at the exhibition, Geko Engineering’s British-made Stump Beaver has been introduced to provide a cost-effective way of removing old tree stumps using compact excavators. The grinder is designed to be used with most micro and mini excavators with operating weights from 0.8 to 3 tonne. Its heavy-duty fabricated frame carries a high inertia cutter wheel driven by a side mounted hydraulic motor, which requires a flow of 10 to 40 litre/min at a pressure of 160 to 250 bar.

MD Graham Dewhirst explained that the grinding wheel has 16 carbide tipped cutting teeth in

groups of two around its circumference. To aid teeth removal for re-grinding or replacement, and to facilitate storage and transportation, the attachment comes with its own purpose-designed support frame. Orders taken at the Show included one from Ipswich-based Emmitt Plant.

Model demonstration by MOBA

A working model excavator was used effectively by MOBA Mobile Automation to demonstrate the benefits of its latest 2D and 3D machine control systems. This allowed visitors to inspect the 2D system, which has a large display screen and simple keypad controls, and is designed to enhance excavating efficiency. It is said to have particular benefits when working under water or where there is not a clear view of the bucket. MOBA also offers control systems for dozers, graders, pavers and rollers. The company promoted its new Material Compaction Assistant (MCA) which can be added to tandem or self propelled vibrating rollers to monitor the number and location of passes. Suitable for machines with a drum width of at least 1m, the MCA provides a screen in front of the roller operator, that, by means of a GPS device, shows the required pass patterns and then the actual coverage achieved. A version is being tested to aid asphalt compaction by also measuring the temperature of the material as it is compacted.
