EXECUTIVE POST

Dear Sir,

I would like to give you my views on the recent Executive Hire Show held in Coventry on 8 and 9 February. I thought it was exceptionally well organised, in terms of pre-registration, the quality and quantity of exhibitors, the facilities and access to the Ricoh Arena.

Steve McKenzie deserves a huge amount of praise for pulling everyone together, doing the miles, taking time to speak to hire people and selling the benefits of the Show. The only thing missing was the MD of HAE and some

representation from the Board Members. The Show relies on hire companies committing one day out of the year to attend and support the exhibition. Otherwise there would not be a Show at all, and our main annual showcase would be lost. I was disappointed that the MD/Chairman/Board Members of HAE were not in attendance. If they don’t show the commitment from the top, why should the rest of us bother? I am starting to question what is the purpose and point of the

Dear Sir,

As Chairman of HAE, I want to respond to Tony Pilkington’s letter about HAE attendance at the recent Executive Hire Show. HAE attended the Show this year, as in previous years, fielding a strong team of staff and business partners. We know that members and non-members want to discuss the benefits of membership and our growing number of products and services when visiting our stand. HAE occupies a prominent stand which, like many exhibitors, has been in the same spot for several years. We are committed to supporting our members and the wider industry in these tough times.

Diary clashes are never easy - we all experience these in our working lives. The decision for our Managing Director and several Board members to attend the Rental Show and the annual meeting of the Global Rental Alliance was taken by the HAE Board. The opportunity to send a strong UK hire team to the Rental Show and strengthen our links with other national hire associations and operators was not something to be lightly dismissed. Our role is to represent the UK hire and rental industry at home and globally. The premier global rental event without a strong and

HAE, and why am I paying for my membership? I understand it is not the HAE’s Show, and they do have a choice whether to attend or not. However, its senior personnel chose to attend the American Rental Show instead of our industry’s exhibition here.

The HAE stand had some outside suppliers on it, from insurance services, and employment law advisers were there. There was also some bloke in fancy dress (perhaps to represent MD Graham Arundell?)

The bottom line is: we need the support of everyone to support the Show, especially from HAE, to which we pay a lot of money. It’s the one chance we all have each year to meet and discuss the benefits of our membership. If Graham and the boys are not interested in our industry, please step aside and let somebody in who does!

representative UK delegation would have surely sent the wrong signals. Many of the challenges (and opportunities) facing our industry are global - whether about the future of the economy, the environment or product innovation. Is Tony really saying that, as some Board members, including myself, were unusually not present at the EHS this year, this somehow prevented HAE from doing its job? In reality, only members representing tool and plant hire attended the Rental Show and GRA meeting. Fellow HAE Board members, including the Vice Chairman, did attend the Show. The strong HAE presence over the two days was noted by members and appreciated by them. (Indeed our new magazine, Interface, includes interviews with several companies which took place on their stands.) Finally, Tony mentioned the ‘bloke in fancy dress’. In fact, he was

promoting our new ID Sentry service aimed at protecting members from ID theft and fraud. Graham and I would be happy to explain the benefits with Tony in more detail, as part of our continuing emphasis on meeting as many HAE members as possible.

Yours sincerely Stephen Dorricott. Chairman, HAE Board • Our brief Rental Show review on page 27 confirms that there's no clash of Show dates in 2013, so we look forward to seeing you all next year.
