day in the life
has been awarded for having the best Net Promoter Store (NPS) score for mystery shoppers in the UK. They achieved a 100 per cent NPS which is amazing, every shopper left the store as a promoter – someone who would actively recommend us. We place great value on the quality of our services and products, so results like this are great to see.
“I don’t work in the stores that frequently anymore, but I still like to visit them all at least once a week”
Chris Scott daily Bread
Chris Scott, who owns six Subway franchises in South Wales, reveals his typical day
7:00am: I usually get up around 7am. I am a slow starter in the morning so it’s a casual breakfast while watching the news. My partner is also involved in the Subway franchise business so we usually discuss our plans for the day. I try to leave the house around 8am.
8:00am: One of the many great things about being a Subway franchisee is that each day is different. Today I am driving to one of my stores in Swansea for an awards presentation.
8:30am-10:00am: I arrive early for the presentation so it gives me a chance to catch up on emails and paperwork.

A week for a Subway franchise runs from a Wednesday to a Tuesday, so on a Wednesday my six stores do a stock count and complete their paperwork. My area manager and I analyse the numbers, sales, labour costs and food costs. If we can control these costs on a weekly basis the accounts are much more manageable at the end of the month. We are also running a great-value offer at the moment offering customers a £3 lunch – this has been very successful in driving new customers into the store.
10:30am-12:00pm: I meet with the providers of Subway’s mystery shopper programme. One of my stores in Swansea
12:00pm-1:00pm: Besides my duties as a franchisee I also do work for Subway with mystery shoppers, so I take this opportunity to talk with our service provider about opportunities we have to improve the programme. Subway franchisees get the opportunity to directly influence the direction their business is going in by taking up positions on various committees such as mystery shopper, new product development or marketing.
1:00pm: I have lunch about three times a week in one of my stores. I don’t work in the stores that frequently anymore, but I still like to visit them all at least once a week. I like to see the service and product that our customers are receiving. My favourite sandwich at the minute is chicken teriyaki, a great-tasting healthy option. Unfortunately, I am at the age where I have to be careful what I eat, so the Subway low-fat range of sandwiches are great.
1:30pm-3:00pm: I take the opportunity to visit my other three stores in Swansea. I like to think that I have a good relationship with all my managers and team. We work hard to make everyone feel valued.
3:00pm-5:00pm: Back to the office for more emails and opening the mail. Most of the communication from Subway is via email, so this can take some time.
6:00pm: In the evening I go to the gym or go running after dinner. My girlfriend is a great cook so I need to work off the calories! n
