Auto Costs Will Skyrocket Under Proposed EPA Car Mileage Standards

The Energy Policy Conservation Act (EPCA) specifically limits the EPA from setting fuel economy standards to “not more than 5 model years.” But the EPA and Department of Transportation plan on setting standards for a nine-year period from 2017-2025. How are they doing this? They’re invoking the Clean Air Act and the alleged authority the EPA has to regulate greenhouse gases.


The EPCA delegates fuel standard authority only to the Department of Transportation and the Clean Air Act gives the EPA no authority over fuel standards.

Unreasonable Obama car mileage standards will destroy the auto industry. A new 893-page plan unveiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis- tration and the EPA will force auto-makers to meet fuel economy standards of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 – double today’s 27.3 standard.


The government admits that it will cost the auto industry $8.5 billion per year to meet this new standard, which means the average price of a car will go up from $2,000 to $2,800. The cost might even be as high as $3,100. The Wall Street Journal estimates that a $15,000 car will be effectively


regulated out of existence.

consumers would face higher-priced vehicles and fewer choices all at the hands of unelected


bureaucrats at the EPA who have never been authorized by Congress to set fuel-efficiency standards for any purpose. That, though, is


consistent with President Obama’s modus operandi–to regulate where he cannot legislate. There is something Congress can and should do: bar the EPA and the NHTSA from implementing and enforcing the new standards by withholding funds or passing a law prohibiting the regulation. The EPA should not be in the business of picking and choosing what kind of cars and trucks Americans can drive, and neither should President Obama. Perhaps Obama and Lisa Jackson are looking forward to the


day when America looks more like China — and we’re all ped- dling bicycles around town instead of driving comfortable, safe cars that use fossil fuel.

Unreasonable Obama car mileage standards will destroy the auto industry.

he EPA is bragging that it’s new fuel standards are being imposed on the auto industry by


effectively bypassing Congress. In fact, the EPA has adopted Obama’s new mantra: “We Can’t Wait” as its rallying cry for imposing regulations without congressional authority or oversight. In a recent press release, the EPA boasted that


the Obama Administration was undertaking a series of “executive actions” because “we can’t wait for Congressional Republicans to act.”
