Bob Walpert leads Ron Boozell in the fast 50 Novice class! Note the snowfence, just like the original Carlsbad track!
Courtney Gannett leads Kirk Waymire and Craig Gisler
Carlsbad Track, former multi number one CMC rider Dan Berg, was the fastest rider of the day. He also had put in hundreds of laps at the original Carlsbad track, and his comments of praise for the replica track was a testament to the accuracy of the new track. Dan took the overall in the Master class as well as the overall in race 1. Dave Blunk won the Master 50 class over Dave Eropkin and Kurt Sofka, Jr. Courtney Gannett went 2-1 in the Expert 40 class, edging out Craig Gisler (1-2), Carlos Palomo (4-3) and Mike Young (3- 4). The Expert 50 class was dominated by Kirk Waymire, who
swept both motos. Andrew Smith went 2-2 for second, and Steve Gerber finished 5-3 for third. Kevin Worrell was the lone Master B rider, but he was fast, mixing it up with the 50 Master riders. Race two was for the Amateur 50 riders and the 60-80 class. John Webb, age 83, made the trek from Long Beach to sample the Carlsbad track. He was not disappointed! Chuck Ramsey won the 70+ class. Chuck has to be one of the stud racers of all time. . .his foot had seriously collided with a hay bale at the previous race at Glen Helen. He thought he had a sprain. It turned out that after the Carlsbad race, Chuck discovered his leg was actually broken; he had been walking around for two weeks and raced the Carlsbad track on a broken leg! Bob Bucy continued his winning ways with 1-1 motos over Jim Lascola (2-2) and Dee Vondracek (4-3). Ron Ryer swept the 60+ class (1-1) over Rich Stuelke (2-2) and Cleyon Loonsfoot (3-3). Cleyon was riding a spanking new KTM 250 SXF, and was looking great in his comeback ride (he had been out for many months recuperating from injuries). Race three included the Novice and Amateur 40+ classes, and the always barnburning 50 Novice class. Mike Swyden took both motos of the 40+ Amateur class over Dave Wilson and Ed Helman. The Novice 40 class was won by a fast Bryce Heathcoat. The race of the day, however, was the Novice 50 class. Don Meiner, currently in the number one points position for the 2011 season, was on his game and swept both motos. His style was fun to watch as he flat-tracked around many of the Carlsbad turns. Bob Walpert rode hard, finishing second in both motos. Ron Boozell’s 3-4 edged out Bill Bouman’s 6-3 for third overall. Tony Parsons came home right after Bouman with a pair of 5’s . Other fast riders in this class included Jon Marshall, Mike Villa, and Bob Cheever.
What a day! The weather was great (even though the forecasters predicted rain!), and The Ranch crew did a superb job on the track. The riders raved about the layout, and how much fun the day had been. I had to concur. . . that ear-to-ear grin is still on my face! The SoCal Club will return to The
Chuck Ramsey, Sr. (age 70+) rode Carlsbad, later to find out he rode with a broken tibia!
Ranch next season to run the Carlsbad Track and once again experience the nostalgia and the fun!
Dee Vondracek, current #1, flat tracks around one of the Carlsbad sweepers!
