The So Cal gang at Hilltoppers GP — Brandice Sands, CA
New Year’s Day at the Little Rubicon which is located north of the Salton Sea. Our group is UTV Underground La Families. We ride all over the southwest and we host the annual Robert Rosas Memorial Off Road Ride every year. We have lots of fun and always have great food. We enjoy our 2007 Rhino very much especially when we are riding with great friends. The Little Rubicon ride is the toughest most technical ride I have ever been on. It is beautiful as well as treacherous. — Jenni and Ronnie Golden, El Centro CA

There is no way for me to pick just one favorite memory. The last year or two have been filled with so many memories it’s hard to list them all. I would say though, racing this year in District 38 has been a great experience. Meeting all the people, spending time with my mom and dad and racing til the checkered flag have been awesome. Lots of battling, excitement, butterflies, frustration and fun. It’s been a challenge full of hot days and cold nights, good and bad but it’s all worth it. Riding on trails and doing things I never thought I’d be able to do with all my friends included. So many stories and memories and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. — Luke Kimball, El Cajon CA

good buddy, Jerry Jones, left camp on his dirt bike around 7 p.m. at Superstition to go to the Iron Door in Ocotillo Wells. He almost made it but got stuck in a big mud hole by San Felipe wash. With one battery bar on his phone left he called the crew for help! John, Taz, Buck, Brian, Thomas and Bobby a.k.a. the Wood Crew said “We are on a mission! Let’s go find Jerry.”

So we all jumped in off road vehicles, Razor, ATVs, Baja Bugs, and drove over Sand Dam and down to Pole Line Road. But Taz and Thomas in the Baja Bug took a short cut, not knowing it was government property and got stopped by a Black Hawk helicopter and Navy police. “They came out of nowhere!”
I recently raced the Full Throttle Wild Turkey 100 and won the Open Quad class and finished fourth overall quad. This was a milestone for me in District 38 desert racing as I have never done this before. Going into the last race of the year, I am in the hunt for the season championship unofficially leading the points with 777 points two points over Eric Hartell (3q) with 775 points, and David Valley (4q) with 678 points. David Valley had a last minute mechanical issue with his engine at the Wild Turkey 100 and unfortunately was unable to start the race. This is a season of racing I will always remember no matter how it turns out! — Kevin Palmer #15q, Lakeside CA
My Best Off Road Memory of 2011: Desert camping over the Thanksgiving weekend at Bradshaw Trails (northeast of Salton Sea) with the Mirich and Albrecht families. Enjoyed some quality time with Jeff who is fighting pancreatic cancer with a winning attitude. We got a surprise visit from Jeremy McGrath on Friday who came out for the day to ride with Jeff and the team. The look on Jeff’s face was ecstatic to say the least. What an awesome day! — Mike Nunnally, Ramona CA
The others continued on the mission. Taz told the Navy police about their friend and they were super cool and escorted them the short way so we could catch up with the crew. Well the crew thought they were being chased off by the Navy police because they had their lights on, blue and red lit up like the 4th of July. So the crew blacked out so they wouldn’t be seen. Then the Navy police got on their loudspeaker and said “John! Come to the light!” It was the funniest thing we’d ever seen. But no one came to the light. You could only hear squeeky brakes from the Razor. So Taz and Thomas took off to go find Jerry. We got back on the trail and we found the crew but they thought we were the police chasing them and the faster we tried to catch up the faster they tried to run. After an hour of cat and mouse they realized it was the Baja Bug. Ha ha!
So now it is about 1 a.m. and super dark. We finally found Jerry in a mud pit. It took five of us and a Razor to pull him out of the mud. On the way back to camp about ten miles out an ATV got a flat. So we got a hose from an empty can of fix-a-flat and transferred air from the Baja Bug tire to the ATV. We did this several times but wasn’t enough so crazy Buck rode that ATV five miles through the dez on two wheels back to camp. Every time we get together we always end up on a rescue mission but this was the mother of all missions. This was the best memory of 2011! — Chuck Young, Vista CA
