Manuel Licon finished fourth for the season in Class 5-1600

t was a picture-perfect winter weekend in Punta Colonet, Baja Mexico, where Acosaq held its last race of the 2011 season. For the final run they chose to use an older route that had not been raced on in five years, and we found ourselves zig-zagging through some of the finest produce farms Baja has to offer with sand washes, tight corners, whoops, hill climbs, spectators, and your typical bandito or two, who, the night before, broke a water main in a tight 200-yard rally section through some trees — flooding it two-feet deep and adding extra difficulty to an area that already had barbed wire fences on both sides for the first lap. We raced six 25-mile laps, with 30 teams racing for their respective points leadership, including myself in a Class 7stock Ford Ranger for my second season. After finishing second overall last year to Frank Felix, I was shooting for the overall title with two points in first and two others really close. I knew it was going to be a great race. It proved to be super tough, with issues with the water hole and power steering hose in the first lap, and then getting stuck chasing Felix through the wash. But we never gave up, and finished him off, as he wound up not completing the race. We came in third place to Oscar Licon (second place) and Jesus Perez (first place). By not giving up and finishing in the freezing Baja night, we were able to clinch the 7s overall title and also the most points for the season out of all classes!

Alex Mendez is still the “King of Colonet” in his ultra-fast Class 10, dominating the Open class in overall season points. Rick Sanchez, Martin Aguirre, and Sergio Saucedo went at it all year in Class 8 with Saucedo toughing it out with some serious competition. Salome Lopez took the overall in Class 7 along with Jesus Jimenez in the 5/1600 class. The motos also went nuts, starting at a chilly 8:00 a.m. Dan Flowers 71v from the D38 races took first in the moto pros, and Hugo Becera finished up in second, along with the overall in points for the season. In the ATV Pro, Carlos Sanchez got second in the race behind Miguel Olivas, but took the overall points lead. Marcos Cousino won the overall in the ATV sportsman class and finished three points behind me for the overall points in the Acosaq 2011 season. Thanks for the great year racing in the Acosaq Championship Series! Check out Acosaq Offroad on Facebook or the
