Chris Nelson at Mammoth

I’ve truly been blessed when it comes to riding in the past year. Here are some of my trips. All rides are on my 06 KTM 525 EXC.

• Escondido to Cabo San Lucas and back 2621 miles in 11 days

• North rim of the Grand Canyon 5 days • Mammoth 5 days

• Bass Lake with the Stewards of the Sierra 5 days

• Southern Utah bike camping for 5 days. This was my favorite ride all year. Riding way up in the mountains with no one around and camping off the bike has got to be one of the best things in the world. Plus you can’t beat southern Utah for the view.

• Plus three, 3 or 4 day trips to Mike’s Sky Ranch in Baja, and dozens of one and two day trips out to Ocotillo Wells. I retired four years ago and most of my old riding buddies were quitting the sport. Then a friend introduced me to SDAR (San Diego Adventure Riders) and I’ve met some of the greatest riding buddies ever.

Best memory so far this desert season is the ride Thanksgiving weekend to Salton Sea, with a stop off at The Alamo restaurant in Salton City for lunch. We hadn’t done that in a few seasons, especially with more buggies than bikes. The Pole Line and Gas Dome trail intersection was crazy . . . almost needed a traffic light! You could see dust lines everywhere. But we were lucky, no problems with the crowds - just a few close calls. Got right up to the water this time, too. Had to get pulled out when we went to leave, but all part of the fun! — Theresa Collett, San Marcos CA
