Sgt. Cantu (left) and Sgt. Graces (center) are two of the countless soldiers treated to homemade meals served by Rachel Medrano (right) and other VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members at the Warrior and Family Support Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
T
here’s no need to post a memo or a menu announcing Rachel Medrano’s turn to cook at the Warrior and Family Support Center at Brooke Army
Medical Center. When her vehicle pulls up, no one will be late for a full plate. After more than a thousand hours as a volunteer cook for the soldiers and their families since 2004, her reputation precedes her. “She’s like the ice cream man, where all the kids come running,” according to Leonor Lira Borjas, President of Auxiliary 9186, San Antonio, where Medrano is a member. “They know when they see her car that she’s going to feed them something good,” she said. She creates everything from scratch, whether it’s chicken fajitas, fideo (Mexican spaghetti), posole (stew-like soup with hominy), carne guisada (meat with gravy sauce), beans, salsa, brisket, or turkey and dressing.
