Sharing A Monumental Story Ohio Auxiliary Teaches Lady Liberty’s History

M

illions of Americans never have the chance to see or learn about the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of freedom and friendship raising her

golden torch for the past 125 years.

But Auxiliary 3809, Middletown, Ohio, has instituted a new tradition in their community to make sure that hundreds of schoolchildren learn about Lady Liberty on every anniversary of her inauguration.

Their members present the makings of Statue of Liberty birthday parties to more than 400 students at one local school annually. After obtaining permission from district offi cials, they distribute packets of educational materials for classroom teachers, including patriotic pencils for the children.

The maximum cost per party has been $75 or less, according to Carole Van Scoter, the Auxiliary’s Patriotic Instructor, a small investment for a very large return.

“We wanted a holiday where we could do something patriotic from our Auxiliary when nobody else does anything,” she said.

“We educate more children every year with Statue of Liberty information. They all get to take a pencil home. It not only spreads the word to the kids, but it takes it home to their parents.”

After three years, their efforts have reached 1,200 students and their families, she said. “How much more patriotic can you be and reach as many people?” ■ MS
