Statue of Liberty National
Monument Superintendent David Luchsinger welcomed the Ladies Auxiliary. “We are so blessed that you are our friends, and that you come here every year to celebrate with us,” he said. Not only is the Statue in fi ne form after 125 years gracing New York Harbor, he said, “the experts say she’s good for another 1,000 years.” Luchsinger was presented with the Auxiliary’s birthday gift by National President Gwen Rankin. $1,000 was delivered by children
and staff of the VFW National Home for Children.
In her address, the National President emphasized the
appropriateness of the Statue’s offi cial title: “Liberty Enlightening the World.”
“Even now, men and women in uniform are fi ghting to do just that: enlighten the world with freedom,” she said.
“In this country, we know, love and cherish our freedoms. We are so blessed! And the members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars know who to thank: our military.”
