Decorate your mantle with this festive Nollaig (Christmas) runner. Simply find a festive background and appliqué Christmas scenes for added detail. Our quilter used Makower’s Joyful Christmas feature panels for adorning this mantelpiece.

Note Please read the entire pattern carefully before cutting and sewing. Seam allowances are ¼” throughout. LOF means length of fabric based on yardage listed.


MATERIALS


2yd (1.8m) red for background 4 panel features white scraps for Nollaig gold scraps green scraps 2yd (1.8m) backing 2yd (1.8m) wadding red beads fusible web


CUTTING


72” x 15” red background 6 holly leaves 6 holly leaves mirrored appliqué shapes per instructions 3 2½”x LOF red for binding


Holly Leaves The tri-cluster of leaves are stitched down at the vein line and are two sided. Cut these six leaves with their mirrored pairing by folding the green fabric and cutting through two layers, wrong sides together.


APPLIQUÉ


Te feature panels, letters, star and bottom two leaves are appliquéd onto the background. 1. Trim feature panels for mantelpiece. Follow fusible web manufacturer’s instructions for best results. 2. Cut fusible web to size and apply to wrong side of panels. 3. Place feature panels on the red background. When happy with layout, fuse in place. 4. Trace letter, star and leaf shapes to the paper side of fusible web. Draw each element separately with adequate spacing. 5. Cut out beyond the line and fuse to the wrong side of chosen fabric. 6. Cut out on the line; this ensures the adhesive applies to the edge of the patches. Follow fusible web manufacturer’s instructions for best results. 7. Layout shapes on the red background. When happy with layout, fuse in place. 8. Stitch hand or machine buttonhole stitch around all raw edges of feature panels and appliqué.

Mantel Hang Be sure to measure your mantel for length and height. Adjust the runner’s measurements accordingly. Ensure that the runner is a safe distance from fireplace.


Depending on your mantel, the method for hanging the runner will vary. Determine the best adhesive that will work and apply to back top edging of runner to adhere to the mantel’s edge. Consider Velcro attachments where possible. To avoid adhesives on your mantle, consider adding stitched loops and hang from stocking hangers securely placed on the mantel.
