Dress up your table with a great Celtic motif using the knot appliqué process seen on page 50. Notice how the simpler Celtic Knot (page 50) has been extended with the addition of the deer head. While the surrounding knotting is more intricate, the centre knot is an extension of the simple one block design.

Preparing Motif Tis motif is approximately 34” in length from outer opposite points of template, measuring crosswise. In addition to the centre Celtic Knot, each prong of the template is provided. Copy, repeat and tape sections together for eight outer mirror design points and for four inner design points.
APPLIQUÉ
Follow the process given on page 50 for creating and adhering the Celtic knot in place. Follow these additional guidelines while creating the deer table mat: • Create large template, by tracing and mirroring quarter sections of the template to create design.
• Align and tape fusible web sheets to appropriate size.
• Place motif to one corner of motif fabric; the excess fabric width is used for binding.
• When handling a large motif, it’s best to use 60 Irish Quilting Issue 16
a fabric glue to secure before stitching in place.
• Mark the centre crossover lines with a fabric water-soluble pen. Always work outward as you mark the next set of cross over lines. Te lines may rub off, so don’t mark too much at one time.
• Use a zigzag stitch set at 2.6 and .65 for stitching the appliqué.
• Determine the outer edge size before quilting. Trim the wadding so it is ½” larger than top.
FINISHING
1. Layer backing, wadding and top. Pin in place. For such a large project, try to manage the bulk to enable smooth drag-free stitching. (You will notice a more challenged sewing motion when the material is caught or is dragging.
