Te final step to a finished quilt is the binding. Tis is a strip of fabric sewn to the top of the quilt and folded over for hand sewing to the back. If binding strips are not bias (where the thread grains run on the diagonal) the threads are easily stressed. Terefore, binding strips of bias direction not only give stretch for curves, they help to wear favourably on a quilt.
A traditional method for creating bias binding is to cut fabric into strips at a 45°angle to the fold. Te strips are then joined with diagonal seams and pressed open. Press the folded edges under ¼”. Consider 2¼” width strips for finished ¼” double fold binding or 1¼” width to for finished ¼" binding.
For bias strips, fold fabric with selvedge at the top and cut. D1.
