Irish Quilting Issue 16 37 Piecing Evolution
There are five blocks in this quilt that comprise nine patch units of 1⅝” squares. In olden days before rotary cutting, quilters
would cut squares from cardboard templates. In years gone by, rotary cutting has made it possible for quilters to chain sew pairs of squares, speedily one after another. Today, clever quilters are always creating shortcuts in patchwork techniques. For these nine patches, avoid mini-size squares by sewing
1⅝” strips together. Following the first join of two strips, flip the new piece. Pin and sew the third strip. By joining three strips at opposite ends to centre strip, the sewn strips remain flat. Cross cut pieced tri-strips into 1⅝” sections.
Strip Piecing
Sew two sets of red, cream and red strips and one set of cream, red and cream strips. With remaining strips (two red and two cream), cut strips in half to create shortened sets of (2) red, cream and red and (2) cream, red
and cream. Colour coordinate 1⅝” sections and sew together for a total of 25 3¾” nine- patch units.
